Holidays to see the Northern Lights
Checked October 2026
The main kinds are glass-roofed cabin stays, activity-led lodge breaks, city breaks with a guided hunt, coastal voyages and Christmas trips. They differ in how mobile you are, how many nights you spend under the aurora band and what is included. Start by deciding whether the lights or the activities come first.
Northern Lights Escapes compares the kinds of trip, what each one includes and where it runs. Every page is built from forecast data, operator pages and official sources. Our travel team at The JLT Group plans and books your trip.
Short breaks are the common shape. The Aurora Zone runs breaks of three, four or five nights. They cover Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. Some centre on glass-roofed cabins. Others add husky, snowmobile and reindeer days.
Count the nights under the glass. The Aurora Zone says glass igloos and aurora cabins sit across Finnish Lapland. It says they can be a whole holiday, or a one- or two-night upgrade.
What is the best trip to see the Northern Lights?
The best trip is the one that puts the lights where you want them. If they come first, choose more nights and a hunt that can move. If they're one highlight among several, choose by the days instead.
Nights matter in every kind of trip. The Aurora Zone describes a three-, four- or five-night break as giving you several goes. You still get daytime for the place.
Mobility matters too. The Aurora Zone says you can watch from a glass-roofed room. It adds that mobile hunts matter when local cloud means somewhere else is clearer.
Which kind of trip suits what you want?
Each kind trades something. Here's what each one gives you.
Glass-roofed cabins
You get the sky above your bed. The Aurora Zone says heated glass roofs sit over the bed. Some cabins add a sofa bed.
Check how many of your nights are under glass. Arctic Direct's three-night Inari example has one night in a glass-roof Aurora Cabin. The other two are in a wilderness room. So a "glass igloo" trip can be mostly standard rooms.
Check the size, too. The Aurora Zone says its Aurora Suites sleep up to five. It advises no more than four adults sharing. Arctic Direct says Nangu Wilderness Hotel is adult-only through the winter.

Activity-led lodge breaks
You fill the days and hunt at night. Arctic Direct's Inari example lists five timed activities. There's a 2-hour snowmobile safari and a 3-hour husky safari. There's a 2-hour reindeer visit. It adds an Aurora camp by snowmobile sleigh, and Aurora snowshoeing.
Warm kit is usually covered. The Aurora Zone says most holidays provide thermal overalls, gloves, boots and socks. It warns that some activities carry single supplements, such as snowmobiling.
Check your insurance before you go. The FCDO says to take insurance that covers your itinerary and planned activities. The Aurora Zone adds that not all policies cover these activities.

City breaks with a guided hunt
You get restaurants at night and a hunt out of town. Best Served puts Tromsø about three and a half hours from London. It says snowmobile, 4x4 or husky transport takes you out to basecamps.
Reykjavik works the same way. Best Served says you can see the lights from Reykjavik's parks or Grótta lighthouse on clear nights. Drives beyond the city improve your chances. The Aurora Zone says Reykjavik's Old Harbour has Northern Lights boat trips.

Coastal voyages
You cover a lot of coast while you hunt. Best Served lists a coastal cruise via the Lofoten Islands and North Cape among its Norway choices. In a 2015 blog post, it said a coastal voyage takes in a large swathe of Arctic Norway. That's a dated opinion, so weigh it as one.
Check the insurance here as well. The FCDO says to take insurance that covers your itinerary and planned activities.

Christmas trips
You get the festive side with the long nights. The Aurora Zone says December is about atmosphere. It lists Father Christmas, husky and reindeer experiences alongside the lights.
Expect dark days. The Aurora Zone says the sun doesn't rise in northern Finland from mid-December to early January. Most activities run in the blue "Kaamos" light or in the dark.
Best Served says its highlights sell out months ahead, especially over Christmas and New Year. Arctic Direct lists Santa breakfasts, private sleigh rides and reindeer feeding on its Finland Christmas trips.
Families get split by age. The Aurora Zone points younger children towards Father Christmas holidays. For older children and teenagers, it suggests glass cabins, huskies and snowmobiles.

What are luxury Northern Lights tours?
It's a word for the type of room and the setting, not for your odds of seeing the lights. So ask how many nights the special room covers. Ask what's included around it, too.
How do you compare like with like?
List what each quote includes. Sellers bundle things differently. Arctic Direct says its prices include flights, transfers, accommodation and activities. Best Served's cards say "incl. flights" trip by trip.
Then check what sits outside. The Aurora Zone says insurance isn't included. It says activities booked after you arrive are paid locally. Those fall outside the operator's responsibility.
The full checklist is on what's included in a Northern Lights holiday.
Which trip kind is worth paying more for?
Pay more for the thing that matters most to you. If it's the lights, pay for nights and a hunt that can move. If it's the room, check how many nights the glass covers.
