Northern Lights cruise in Norway

Checked October 2026

A coastal voyage along Norway can work. Check how many nights you spend north of the Arctic Circle, and what comes with the fare. Best Served lists one among its Norway choices. Ask whether flights and financial cover are part of what you book.

Is a Northern Lights cruise in Norway worth it?

It can be, if a moving base suits you. Best Served lists a coastal cruise via the Lofoten Islands and North Cape among its Norway choices. The others are Tromsø, the Kirkenes SnowHotel and Svalbard. A ship is one of several ways to do Norway.

The pull of a cruise is the stretch of coast you cover. That is a different style of trip from a base in a city.

The catch is that the lights depend on the sky the ship reaches. The US agency NOAA says the sky must be clear of cloud and dark. A ship can't promise either.

What is the best cruise to see the Northern Lights?

The one that gives you enough time in the north, in a month with long nights. Compare the voyage itself, not the brand.

Best Served's blog of 3 December 2015 makes one claim. It says a Hurtigruten cruise lets you take in a large swathe of Arctic Norway. It adds that this improves your chance of the lights. That post is over ten years old. Treat it as one operator's opinion, not current advice.

How many nights are north of the Arctic Circle?

Ask how many nights the voyage spends north of the Arctic Circle. That number tells you how many real chances you get.

Ask about the itinerary on your dates. Ask whether the ports can change, and what happens then.

Are flights and financial cover included?

Not always, so check. The Aurora Zone says its flight-inclusive holidays have different financial cover from its land-only bookings. So cover depends on what is booked. It also depends on who sells it.

That is one firm's model, not every seller's. Our booking guide explains who takes your booking and how to ask about cover.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. The FCDO is the UK government's travel advice service. It says to take out insurance that covers your itinerary and planned activities. Tell the insurer you are taking a cruise. Tell it what you plan to do on shore.

How does a ship compare with a Tromsø base?

A ship moves you along the coast. A base keeps you in one place. In Tromsø, Best Served says the best views come from leaving town for a basecamp. Our Tromsø page covers that option.

Pick the ship if you want to see the coast. Pick Tromsø if you want a city to return to each evening.

Before you book a coastal voyage, ask our travel team:

  • How many nights are north of the Arctic Circle?
  • Can the ports change, and what happens then?
  • Are flights part of the booking?
  • What does the fare include?
  • What cover applies to each part?

One more point on comparing: a cruise and a land trip are not like for like. A land base gives you a fixed place to return to each evening. A ship gives you a changing view. Ask our travel team which suits the way you like to travel, and read the itinerary day by day.
