Northern Lights in Tromsø

Checked October 2026

Yes, Tromsø is a sound base for the lights. Best Served puts it about three and a half hours from London, in the heart of the aurora zone. The catch is cloud. Book more than one night and keep your evenings free for a second try.

December covers trips from 2023 to 2025 only, and the confidence band is roughly 72% to 89%. This describes reviewers, not your chances of seeing the lights, and it says nothing about the sky. Base: 1,412 published traveller reviews we analysed, posted Jan 2023 to Oct 2026. Checked October 2026.

Method: from published traveller reviews posted Jan 2023 to Oct 2026 we kept the 1,412 about a Northern Lights trip in the aurora season, then counted the reviewers who said whether they saw the lights, by the month they travelled. An independent reader checked a sample of the coding and recomputed every count.

Is Tromsø a good base for the Northern Lights?

Pick Tromsø if you want a real city under the aurora zone. Best Served says the lights can show from the harbour on a good night. It adds that the best views come from leaving town. That means a snowmobile, 4x4 or husky sled to a basecamp.

So choose a trip that gets you out of the city after dark. A hotel window alone is the weaker plan. The US agency NOAA says you need a sky that is both clear of cloud and dark.

For the evenings in town, Best Served lists restaurants and pubs. That makes Tromsø easy on the nights the sky stays shut. You have somewhere warm to go and something to do.

What is the best month in Tromsø?

Look at the light before you look at the calendar. The Aurora Zone gives Tromsø over 11 hours of daylight at the start of October. By the end of October that falls under 7 hours. The sun is gone from the end of November to mid-January. By the end of February it is back to about 9 hours.

Longer nights give you more dark hours to hunt in. Shorter days also mean less time for sightseeing. Decide which matters more to you.

The Aurora Zone says its season in Tromsø ends at the end of March. Plan for a trip that finishes before then. Our best month page sets the months side by side. The operators don't all agree.

Pack for the month you choose. The Aurora Zone says November averages in Tromsø sit between 2°C and freezing. February averages run from -2 to -7°C. Plan thermal layers and warm boots.

Is Tromsø better than Iceland for the Northern Lights?

Neither wins on the lights alone. The Aurora Zone lists clear weather and more than one night among its four things that make a place good. Tromsø's case is simple. It is about three and a half hours from London. It has a city to return to, and trips that head out of town.

If you are weighing it against Reykjavik, read our city-break page. It covers pairing a city with a guided tour, in Reykjavik or in Tromsø.

Is Tromsø expensive?

Yes, by Nordic standards. The Aurora Zone calls Norway the most expensive Nordic country for accommodation, food and drink. It says alcohol is heavily taxed.

Ask our travel team what the trip includes before you compare any figures. Meals and drinks are where a cheap-looking quote can grow. Our cost guide shows what moves the price.

What if the sky is cloudy?

Then you try again, so stay long enough to get a second chance. A single night leaves you with one throw of the dice.

Cloud is the main risk anywhere on this list. Our cloud forecast page explains what a forecast can and can't tell you.

A ship is another option. Read about a Northern Lights cruise in Norway. It suits some people better than a city base.

What should you ask our travel team?

Put these to our travel team.

  • How many of my evenings are spent out of town?
  • What does each outing include, and for how long?
  • Which meals are in the price?
  • What is the plan if the sky is cloudy?
  • What clothing is provided for the cold?

The answer to the cloudy-night question tells you most about the trip.
