Glass igloos for the Northern Lights: are they worth it?
Checked October 2026
A glass igloo gives you the sky from your bed, but it can't move to clearer sky. A guided hunt can. The Aurora Zone says mobile hunts matter when local cloud means somewhere else is clearer. So weigh the view from bed against your odds.
Are glass igloos worth it?
They're worth it for the view, and less so for your odds. A glass roof gives you a view from bed. That is the pleasure of it. The Aurora Zone says its heated glass roofs sit above the bed. Some cabins include a sofa bed.
But a cabin can't chase the sky. The Aurora Zone says you can watch from the room. It also says mobile hunts matter when local cloud means somewhere else is clearer. A cabin stays where it is. A minibus or snowmobile can go to the gap.
The Aurora Zone adds that a high Kp is not essential. Kp is the activity score. It matters less than cloud and your position.
That's the trade-off. If your odds matter most, pair the glass nights with a guided hunt that can travel.
What does a trip with a glass igloo look like?
Look at how operators build them. Arctic Direct's three-night Inari example has one night in an Aurora Cabin with a heated glass roof. The other two nights are in a wilderness room. So a "glass igloo" trip can be mostly standard rooms.
You get one night under the glass, and two nights somewhere else. Our cost guide shows what moves the price of a trip built that way.
Where are the glass-roofed stays?
Finnish Lapland is where The Aurora Zone lists them. Our Finland page names the places. If you'd rather stay in Norway, ask our travel team what they can offer there.
What should I check before booking one?
Count the nights under glass. A trip may sell the igloo and give you only one night in it. Check the size of the room too.
The Aurora Zone says its Aurora Suites sleep up to five. It advises no more than four adults sharing. Arctic Direct says Kakslauttanen's large igloos take a maximum of five. It says Nangu Wilderness Hotel is adult-only through the winter. If you are travelling with children, ask about this early.
The Aurora Zone also offers an Aurora Kota at Ivalo as a single special night. That is one more way to buy a single night.
Then ask the practical questions. What is the bathroom like? Are there curtains for when you want to sleep? What does the seller count as a sighting? Is there any alert if the lights appear?
How much does a glass igloo cost?
It depends on the month, the nights under glass and what comes with the stay. Our travel team quotes your actual trip. Compare what each quote includes before you compare the figure. Our cost guide explains what to look at.
To compare two glass-roof stays, ask our travel team:
- How many nights are under glass?
- How many people can share the room?
- What does the bathroom look like?
- Can I close the roof or use curtains?
- What counts as a sighting, and who decides?
Put the answers side by side before you pay.
