Northern Lights in Sweden

Checked October 2026

Choose Sweden for quiet, dark skies. The Aurora Zone singles out Abisko as renowned for comparatively clear skies. That reputation comes from tour operators, not an audited figure. Plan for several nights and expect cloud on some of them.

Why is Abisko recommended for clear skies?

Tour operators recommend it. The Aurora Zone says Abisko is renowned for comparatively clear skies. It gives no figure, so treat that as a reputation.

Treat "comparatively clear" as a lean in your favour, not a promise. The US agency NOAA says you need a sky that is clear of cloud and dark. Our cloud forecast page explains what a forecast can and can't do.

Remote places also take longer to reach. Allow for that when you count your nights. Book several, not one or two.

Is Abisko better than Tromsø for the Northern Lights?

Abisko has the clearer-sky reputation, but distance is the catch. Arctic Direct's blog of 24 August 2017 says it tends not to send ICEHOTEL guests on to Abisko. Its reason is the length of the drive if the lights do not show.

That is one operator's opinion from 2017. Read it as a pointer, not a rule. The practical lesson still holds. Distance from your base adds a cost if the sky lets you down. Ask how far you will travel to your best viewing spot.

What is there to do in Abisko and Swedish Lapland?

The Aurora Zone describes three places worth knowing. Kiruna combines wilderness, Sámi culture and the ICEHOTEL. Luleå offers the frozen archipelago. Abisko is the one for clearer skies.

Best Served adds some detail. It says the ICEHOTEL sits 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. It says the Aurora Sky Station is reached by chairlift. It also says the Björkliden Aurora Festival runs in mid-January. Check this year's dates with our travel team.

How cold and how dark is it?

The Aurora Zone gives Kiruna about 7 hours of daylight at the end of October. There is no sun from mid-December until January. At the end of January you get about 6 hours. By the end of February it is about 9. By the end of March it is over 13.

It says the season closes in the first two weeks of April. It puts December to February between -5 and -15°C, with lows around -35°C experienced. Pack for the extreme end, not the average.

What do drinks cost?

Budget a little extra for evenings out. On its FAQ page, read on 15 October 2026, The Aurora Zone puts wine in Sweden at £7 to £8 a glass. It puts a pint at about £6. These are the operator's estimates, so treat them as a guide.

Before you book a Swedish trip, ask our travel team:

  • How far is the drive from the airport to the base?
  • How many nights are at the dark-sky base?
  • Does the trip include a mobile hunt?
  • What is in the price, and what is extra?
  • Which activities run on my dates?
  • If Åre is on my shortlist, what is the case for it, and where does that come from?

Remote places reward a longer stay, so ask about the number of nights too.
