Cheapest place to see the Northern Lights

Checked October 2026

The Aurora Zone calls Norway the most expensive, and its drink prices for Iceland are not low either. So compare what each quote includes, not the country. Best Served says its highlights sell out months ahead, especially over Christmas and New Year.

What is the cheapest country to see the Northern Lights in?

What you can compare is the cost of living on the ground. The Aurora Zone calls Norway the most expensive Nordic country. It gives these drink prices for the others:

  • Sweden: a pint about £6, a glass of wine £7 to £8
  • Finland: a glass of wine £6 to £8
  • Iceland: a pint about £7, a glass of wine about £9

These are the operator's estimates from its FAQ page, read on 15 October 2026. The page gives them no date of its own. Treat them as a guide to the gap between countries, not as menu prices.

The bigger cost is the trip itself. That depends on the month, the nights and what is included. A cheaper country can still cost more. The quote may leave out flights or meals.

Does one seller's list show a cheaper way?

Not on its own. On 15 October 2026, Best Served listed a four-day Luleå city break in February. Its "from" price was lower than that of a four-day Tromsø break. Both included flights. A "from" price is a starting point, not what you pay.

That is one seller's list on one day. It doesn't tell you that Luleå is better or worse for the lights. Don't rank sellers or places on it.

Is there a cheaper month?

Ask our travel team to quote two dates side by side, because demand differs by season. The Aurora Zone says autumn has fewer crowds than Christmas and the winter peak. It also says autumn is milder. Best Served says its highlights sell out months ahead, especially over Christmas and New Year.

Two quotes for two dates show the gap. Then you see the difference for your own trip, not an average.

Our where page compares the main places.

Why do land-only prices look low?

Because they leave things out. A land-only quote doesn't include flights. Our guide to what is included shows what to check.

Never compare a land-only figure with a flight-inclusive one. They are not the same product.

Is Tromsø or Iceland expensive?

The Aurora Zone says Norway is the most expensive Nordic country for accommodation, food and drink. It adds that alcohol is heavily taxed. On its FAQ page, read on 15 October 2026, it puts a pint in Iceland at about £7.

Our travel team quotes your actual trip. Our cost guide shows what moves a quote up or down.

To keep the cost down, ask our travel team:

  • Which month costs least on my dates?
  • Does the quote include flights?
  • Which meals and drinks are extra?
  • Is a shorter stay cheaper per night?
  • Are there supplements for a room to myself?

Ask for two quotes side by side, so you see the gap for your own trip.

One last point on price: a low quote is not always the cheapest trip. A low figure that leaves out transfers or meals will cost more once you add them. Ask each seller to list what is inside, then compare the lists before the figures.
