Questions to ask before you book

Checked October 2026

Ask who sells the holiday, what is included, how many nights are in the aurora zone and what happens if you see nothing. Ask who decides whether you saw the lights, and what your insurance must cover for husky and snowmobile days.

What should I ask before booking a Northern Lights holiday?

Start with six questions. Put them to the seller and get the answers in writing.

  • Who sells this holiday, and who do I pay?
  • What is included, and what is extra?
  • How many nights will I spend in the aurora zone?
  • What does the guarantee mean, if there is one?
  • What must my insurance cover?
  • When is the balance due?

The sections below take them in turn. Each one has a reason behind it.

Who sells it, and what protection applies?

Ask for the seller's full name and what covers your money if the seller fails. Our financial protection page explains what that cover applies to and what it leaves out. The footer of this site names who books your trip: The JLT Group.

Ask too which parts of the trip the cover applies to. Don't assume it covers every item on the booking.

What is included, and what is extra?

Ask for a list, item by item. Our guide to what is included shows what to check: flights, transfers, meals, warm clothing and activities.

Then ask about the extras. The Aurora Zone says single supplements apply, sometimes to activities. It says a flight supplement can be added if flight prices rise. A quote that omits these may look cheaper than it is.

Ask when the balance is due too. The Aurora Zone says it wants the balance 16 weeks before departure. Other sellers will differ, so ask yours.

What does a Northern Lights guarantee mean?

Read the small print. The Aurora Zone says to check who decides whether the lights were seen. It also says no responsible operator can promise a display. So a guarantee is not a promise to show you the lights.

Ask what you get if you see nothing. Is it a refund, a free retry or something else? If it is a retry, does it fall inside your stay? Ask for the terms in writing and read them before you pay.

What must my travel insurance cover?

Your itinerary, your planned activities and your expenses in an emergency. The FCDO is the UK government's travel advice service. It says to take out appropriate insurance before you go. Its Norway page says the cover should include your itinerary, your planned activities and emergency expenses.

The Aurora Zone makes insurance a pre-requisite. It says it does not check outside policies. It recommends running through every activity with the insurer. So list what you plan to do, such as husky sledding or snowmobiling, and ask the insurer about each one.

What are the passport and entry rules for Norway?

Read the live FCDO page before you go, because rules change. On 15 October 2026 its Norway entry requirements page said Schengen rules apply. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive. It must be valid for 3 months after you leave. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa.

The page also said you may be asked for proof of accommodation, insurance and a return ticket. It said the EU border registration scheme (EES) may add queue time. Read the FCDO Norway entry requirements for the current position.
